Our staff specializes in the treatment of anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), tic disorders (including Tourette Syndrome), trichotillomania, skin-picking and related disorders. Our patients can expect to receive the most advanced, evidence-based expert therapeutic services and personalized care.
Here are some of the services that we provide:
We conduct a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation in order to determine the best course of action for treatment or referral. This evaluation determines the nature and type of anxiety or related disorders present, along with any additional difficulties the patient may be experiencing. The evaluation typically last for 2 hours and involves an in-depth semi-structured interview, as well as the completion of questionnaires.
Based upon results of the diagnostic evaluation, treatment recommendations are made which may include services at MATCh or referrals to other professionals. Typically, sessions occur weekly for approximately 16 to 20 weeks, but treatment is tailored to the individual needs of each patient. All of our treatment programs are based on cognitive-behavioral principles and involve education as well as teaching patients and parents specific skills to better manage their symptoms:
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for Anxiety Disorders: CBT is a powerful, evidence-based treatment for anxiety disorders that is short-term and action-oriented. It involves teaching patients to recognize their emotional state, learn coping skills to manage their symptoms, and form a new relationship with their anxiety. Exposure, or gradually confronting one’s fears, is thought to be the “active ingredient” of CBT and is a key feature of all of our treatment programs.
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP): ERP is a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy that is the most effective behavioral intervention for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). It involves exposing patients to situations that trigger obsessions (Exposure) while resisting the urge to engage in compulsions (Response Prevention). Over time, it becomes easier to resist compulsions or rituals and eventually breaks the OCD cycle.
Habit Reversal Training (HRT): HRT is an evidence-based form of behavioral therapy that is used to treat a number of different disorders that are similar to “habits”. These include tics, Tourette Syndrome, and body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) such as trichotillomania, skin-picking, and nail-biting. It involves awareness training, or noticing warning signs that a problematic behavior is about to occur, and developing competing responses, or replacement behaviors that can interrupt the cycle of tics or BFRBs.
Intensive Treatment Programs
We also offer semi-intensive and intensive treatments for certain disorders, including OCD, phobias, and panic disorder. Semi-intensive treatment involves meeting twice weekly for 1-2 hours per session. Intensive treatment usually lasts 3-6 weeks and involves meeting for 1-2 hours, 3-5 times per week. More intensive levels of care may be preferred for patients with higher levels of symptoms, who wish to consolidate treatment (e.g., over summer months), or who are traveling from a distance for treatment.
Group Treatment Programs
We are excited to announce that we will be offering a PEERS social skills group at HARBOR Center City this fall. PEERS is an evidence-based social skills program appropriate for teens with ASD, ADHD, depression, anxiety, and other social challenges. Please see our flyer for additional details.
